The platter that landed on our table was enormous.
Chicken, succulent fish, lamb kebabs, salad, dips – enough food to feed far more than the four of us sitting there.
My husband and I were at a beautiful Asian wedding, seated with another couple we’d just met. Between the four of us, we didn’t really know what to expect when the food started arriving.
Our eyes widened.
How on earth were we supposed to eat all of this?
Still, we gave it our best shot! We tried everything, went back for seconds and eventually reached the point where we simply couldn’t eat any more.
We sat back, very full and rather pleased with ourselves.
Then the waiter came over.
‘Have you finished with your starters?’
Starters?
I thought we’d just completed an eating challenge.
Then the main course arrived – a huge tray of rice, three different curries and naan bread, followed by dessert and ice cream.
There was so much more to come than any of us had imagined.
It reminded me of the goodness of God. You can have big expectations of Him and still have no idea just how much more He has for you.
Verse of the Week
‘Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.’ —Eph. 3:20
God is able to do far beyond what you can ask or imagine, but notice how the verse ends: ‘according to the power that works in us.’
Your faith has a part to play.
God is extraordinarily generous, yet you can live with such small expectations of His goodness that you never reach for what He wants to give you.
So raise your expectations. Believe Him for more.
You may think you’re believing big already – and discover you’ve only seen the starters.
